Most service businesses begin by selling expertise directly to clients. This is often the most natural way to start, and it works well in the early stages.

However, over time many founders begin to notice the same pattern: income grows only when working hours increase.

More clients require more delivery time. Marketing, administration and communication also expand as the business grows. Gradually the founder becomes the central engine that keeps everything running.

At that point the business can begin to feel surprisingly fragile. Growth depends on how much energy the founder has available, and scaling becomes difficult.

The founder ends up trapped in a time-for-money model.
